ICYMI:

Julian Langford began his role as Assistant Manger-Client Services at Genesco Sports Enterprises in 2017. Julian assists in maintaining as well as growing the relationship between MillerCoors and Papa Johns and their respective sports teams.

Langford earned his Bachelor degree from the Rawlings Sports Business Management Program at the Maryville University of Saint Louis in 2017. At Maryville, Julian interned with Rawlings, Genesco, and studied abroad in Switzerland.

GSE is a sports marketing consulting agency that acts as the "middle man" between teams and brands. GSE  is known for their negotiation expertise to retain long-lasting influential relationships with leagues, teams, and athletes.

Within negotiations, Julian strives to do as much for the brand-side as he can. GSE oversees the interests of the brand in negotiation meetings and values out each aspect of what the team is asking for. GSE values out each aspect based on the market itself and who the team/brand is. Following contracts and negotiations, Genesco Sports Enterprises is also responsible for ensuring the fulfillment of assets which can range from stadium signage to event activation and everything in between. In summary, GSE connects brands with fans to build strong awareness and loyalty.

For SBC members actively seeking employment or opportunities in the sports industry, especially opportunities in the world of sports such as Genesco Sports Enterprises, Julian Langford had this to say:

On the rigorous job search straight out of college...
-"First, eliminate what you do not want to do”
-“ Know who you are as a person and find a company that you align with their culture.”
-"Start wide and work narrow, is the position outside of your comfort zone? Will it push you?"
-"Don't start applying places just be employed, find an environment that you love being a part of and puts you in the best position to be successful.”
-"Pick a company that you’d like to work for or have interest in, search their list of employees on LinkedIn and reach out to someone. Ask them questions, pick their brain. The ability to build connections is extremely beneficial.”

On why Julian chose to work for an agency...
-"There are many jobs on the team side of the industry to get your foot in the door, but agencies offer more opportunities to build those essential connections and work directly with teams. I also wanted to be a part of a company that pushes me every day”

On what drives him...
-"Talking to teams on a daily basis and building those relationships as well as building my network.”
- “Seeing my work, or something I helped make happen, come to life as I walk down the street every day, or when I turn on the TV or go to a sporting event”

On how to succeed in a professional work environment...
-"Always build connections and realize that you are your own brand."
-"Come to work and don't be afraid to be a badass- be yourself.”
-“Always “’Punch above your weight”- Just because you are a young professional does not mean you need to do the work of a young professional- always strive to exceed what’s expected”
-“Don’t be a robot. There are many people that can take tests, but being successful requires flexibility, personality and in sports specifically, feeding off of emotion”

Thank you to Julian Langford for making the trip from Chicago and taking the time to share his invaluable insight with our club about the ins and outs of working for a sports agency like Genesco Sports Enterprises as well as his advice on how to succeed in such a competitive industry.
