Priority Sports & Entertainment Panel: Watch it Here
Speakers:
  • Zach Rosen: Communications Coordinator
  • Chase Lanier: Marketing & Client Services Coordinator
  • Max Berman: Manager-Coaches, Front Office & Broadcasters Division
Key Takeaways:
  • The importance of internships:
    • Learn as much as you possibly can about your intended industry and other industries too
    • It's equally, if not more important to learn about what you don't like versus what you do
    • Be absolutely open-minded about anything and everything
    • Maximize your time there; make relationships and learn as much as you possibly can
    • It's okay to take an unpaid internship or to take an internship position after college
  • Your first job isn't going to be your dream job, and it certainly won't be your last job either
  • The sports industry is not a linear structure; everyone you meet takes different paths and comes from different backgrounds to end up in the same place
  • Sports are competitive not just on the court or field, but among the people working behind the scenes as well
  • Remember that you're not bigger than the person next to you and everyone learns this in their own way
  • Play your own ball, your story is going to be different than everyone else's
  • At the end of the day, sports are fun and working for sports should always be fun
  • Make sure that you remind yourself that sports is the best industry to work in, don't lose track of that or get desensitized
  • How do you know that it's time to move on from your current job and/or position?:
    • When your dream job starts feeling like actual work and it's no longer fun
    • Your passion for sports will wane if it's not something that you really want to do
    • When you aren't learning anything new in your role or aren't taking on any new challenges
    • When you're not seeing the potential for growth within your career
    • Remember that nothing is permanent and you'll adjust accordingly
    • It's more than okay to jump around and not stick to the same job, it's a different experience for everyone
    • It's an important, good, and sensible thing to begin looking around when you know your job isn't right for you
    • Never be afraid to shake hands with someone from another brand, company, or organization
    • If you decide to stay in the same place, try reinventing yourself by expanding your skillset
  • It's a relationship based business, try to make as many connections as possible
  • Hear from everyone that you work/connect with, their stories and trajectories may give you ideas on how to get where you want to be
  • No one will ever me mad about receiving a congratulatory email, pick someone from any front office and reach out to them
